Kidney Function Test (KFT)
The Kidney Function Test (KFT) is a blood test panel used to assess kidney health by measuring waste products and other substances in the blood. The kidneys filter waste, regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, and help maintain the body’s internal environment.
Tests Included
- Serum Creatinine: Measures a waste product from muscle metabolism. It is used to assess kidney filtration.
- Blood Urea: Measures urea, a waste product formed when the body breaks down protein.
- Uric Acid: Measures uric acid levels, which may be relevant to gout, kidney stone risk, and certain metabolic conditions.
- Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Measures the nitrogen component of urea in the blood.
Note: BUN and blood urea represent related measurements of the same waste product. The exact parameters included depend on your laboratory’s KFT package.
Why Is a KFT Recommended?
Your healthcare professional may recommend a kidney function test to help:
- Assess kidney function
- Monitor known kidney conditions
- Evaluate abnormal creatinine or urea levels
- Support the assessment of gout or elevated uric acid
- Monitor kidney health during certain treatments or medical conditions
Sample Requirements
- Sample type: Blood, typically serum.
- Fasting: Not always required; follow your doctor’s and laboratory’s instructions.
- Preparation: Inform your healthcare professional about medicines and supplements you take.
Understanding Your Results
Abnormal results can occur for several reasons, including kidney disorders, dehydration, dietary factors, muscle mass, and certain medicines. Creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urine tests, symptoms, and medical history may also be needed to assess kidney health.
No single result can diagnose kidney disease on its own.
