Malaria Pv & Pf Test
The Malaria Pv & Pf Test is a diagnostic blood test used to detect infection associated with two common malaria parasites: Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum. These parasites are transmitted through infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
The test may use a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) method or another validated laboratory method, depending on the service offered.
Types of Malaria Detected
- Plasmodium vivax (Pv): A malaria parasite that can cause recurring episodes because dormant liver stages may reactivate.
- Plasmodium falciparum (Pf): A malaria parasite that can cause severe, life-threatening illness and requires prompt medical attention.
Why Is the Malaria Test Recommended?
A healthcare professional may recommend this test to help:
- Investigate fever with suspected malaria
- Identify malaria parasite species covered by the test
- Support timely diagnosis and treatment
- Guide further investigation when symptoms persist despite a negative result
Sample Requirements
- Sample type: Whole blood, commonly collected by finger prick or venous blood draw, depending on the method.
- Fasting: Not required.
- Preparation: No special preparation is usually needed.
Understanding Your Results
- Positive: Malaria antigen or other test target detected, depending on the method.
- Negative: The test target was not detected. A negative result does not always exclude malaria, particularly when clinical suspicion remains high.
Your healthcare professional may recommend microscopy, repeat testing, or additional investigations when needed. Suspected malaria requires prompt medical evaluation, especially when there is severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or other warning signs.
